José Piñar’s work has always remained loyal to painting as a medium of expression and lies within what can be broadly defined as abstraction. Nevertheless, beneath the formal outcome of his work, we can always perceive instrospection in the mental processes that guide the way his hand spreads color over a surface, at times driven by logic and sequences of numbers, by self-imposed rules, by chance, by the systematic use of color, or, in other cases, by the translation to the cavas of formal actions imported from Photoshop. While the artisan force of painting has always remained present in his art, recently, an attentional turn outward has taken root at the base of his work

This move to a more external reality is reflected in a series of paintings and drawings which capture visual impresions; landscapes and skies, urban views, advertising, and images drawn from comics or street art.His work forms part of numerous collections, among which are the the Reina Sofia National Art Museum (Madrid), the collection of the Bank of Spain in Madrid, the collection of the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art (Seville), and the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art Unión Fenosa, in A Coruña.
